Type fonts were not considered to fall within the statutorily acceptable subject matter of Design and were consequently not protected under the Design Law in Korea before July 1, 2004. Also, they were not protected under the Copyright Law. However, recent development of the type fonts has reached a new level of visual art, giving much more meaning than for mere communication.

To accommodate this change, it has been decided to provide protection to type fonts from July 1 2004 under the Design Law. So unless a type font is created purely for communication purposes, it will be considered to form an artistic appearance and thereby is protected under the Design Law. Additionally, even if such type fonts does not have an artistic appearance, they will not be required to be removed or deleted from the article of design but will be allowed to be present on the article of the design application, though no specific right to the type fonts will be given.
